The 2009 American Icons Gala was filled with celebrity chefs and celebrity folk who came to honor chefs and their achievements in the culinary arena, and raise funds for the James Beard Foundation which promotes a deeper understanding of american cuisine. Actor Alec Baldwin was in high spirits as he and other VIPs toured the Four Seasons Restaurant’s kitchen at 99 East 52nd Street. For one night only, several chefs being honored would use this kitchen for a tour de force menu. I briefly spoke with Restaurateur B. Smith and her husband Dan Gasby, about their feelings on where the industry is now. They spoke to me about how their customer ranges from the high end diner to ..”the woman who washes floors”… , and how a restaurant owner must now shift in order to meet the needs of their customer. Even Executive Chef Christopher Lee of restaurant Aureole, spoke of catering to a customer who can have more choice of what, and how much to spend. The Four Seasons Restaurant now has a prix fixe menu too. After the gentle hug and a kiss I got from co-owner Julian Niccolini, I just might give it a try. Tens of thousands of dollars swirled through the air as the auctioneer guided people to purchase sought after bottles of wine, dinner packages for 2 to 50 people and getaway trips to Paris, etc. Don’t know who was doing the bidding but sure would like to be their BFF. I sure get weak in the knees for  men who can cook like nobody’s business. The most repeated phrase all night when guests were asked, why they were here? “I just like food.”. Me too. And I adore all the gifted people who created edible beauty on my plate.

GalabWhat a Glow

The Sharing The Light Gala was buzzing with donors like the Segal Family and supporters such as New York State Governor David Paterson and United Nations Ambassador to Liberia, Nathaniel Barnes. At the Four Seasons Restaurant at 52 Street  near Park avenue, The Mac Della Cooper Foundation invited people of industry, designers and entertainers to participate in their fundraising efforts. They claim it is the first tuition free school to house 200 children including abandoned and orphaned children since the Liberian civil war.

The word used to describe Mac Della Cooper, the founder of the organization over and over again that night was “relentless”. Mac Della never hesitates to call donors for continued support and create new ones. She continues to work out of her home insisting that funding given to her organization go towards the children she supports not toward staffing and office costs. Ms. Cooper fled her country of Liberia at the age of 12 and came to the U.S. to make  a new life. After attending college, tuition free here in the U.S., she wanted to also give those children in Liberia, the feeling that it is their right to education not an unattainable, costly privilege. One of her biggest volunteers is the school’s dutch born architect Winka Dubbledam principal of the firm Archi-Tectonics who is donating her time to the project. They are a few weeks away from breaking ground in Liberia at the school’s site.
One friend of Mac Della’s mentioned that even U2’s lead singer, Bono was taken by Mac Della’s spirit and bent her ear for several hours at a past chance meeting. She is a glowing and unshakable force. You go girl!

Moby And Gaye and “Some Guy Who Crashed The Photo” Whoop it Up In NYC

Thriving and Surviving

Gloria Gaynor’s signature song “I Will Survive” was the song that brought the house down as Ms. Gaynor performed for an excited crowd at the Womens Law.org 10th anniversary celebration. The organization helps abused women and girls with legal assistance and other resources they may need. Skyline Studios at 465 10th avenue, donated the space and their time for the event as well as each performer, event producer Bronson Van Wyck and Bites catering. The 1970’s club scene theme included some guests dressing the part from a pink cotton candy afro to flashy metallic outfits. The DJ was incredible, playing just about every great hit from the 70’s. After Moby performed a few songs with the band The Little Death, he hung around and danced as well.

I asked Moby about his commitment to the organization. He spoke of his involvement with restoring state funding for additional shelter housing for abused women in the state of California. Asking his feelings about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Awards which was recently in town, he replied although he’s attended in the past its not really his thing. He said that most of his friends aren’t musicians and he’s more at ease surrounded by some of the people who attended that night. Actress Mariska Hargitay of NBC’s Law and Order SVU was also there in support of the cause particularly since her TV character is a police detective who was conceived through rape. Womens Law.org  mixed with a vibrant  crowd  represented a group looking to a brighter future for their clients and continuing the neccesary work.
