East Side says Just Drive

East Side House Settlement revved up the senses with a preview of the New York Auto Show at Jacob Javits Center near 42 Street and 12th ave. The 11th annual gala had rare cars that made your heart stop, forget about the real world, step in and just imagine the ride. Some cars that demanded attention, and got it were, a 2010 rolls royce drophead coupe, 2009 Ferrari 599gtb, 2010 Spyker C8 Spyder, and a Lamborghini Super Veloce. The new Aston Martin Rapide was driven into the dinner event for its driving package live auction. But besides the glitz and glam, most people were there to support the East Side House Settlement that offers social services to families and others in the South Bronx. The funds raised will be used for motivating ESH students and serving the South Bronx community. Bobby Zarin, husband of Jill Zarin of the reality show “Real Housewives of New York City”, spoke to me of his other love, cars. His favorite, the Bentley. He said he bought his first Bentley when he was in his 20’s, and he’s been hooked ever since. He also mentioned the 16 or 17 car garage he had at a former home. But I guess even Bobby has had to scale down a bit these days. After another successful business deal, Zarin is seeking his next Bentley. Other happy faces that night were from Daniel and Hank of Greystone Aviation. As they cruised the Porsches and Jaguars they regaled me with tales such as the upstate deer that destroyed a Porsche, the magnificence of car engineering and darn it, just how good it feels to drive a great car. My car of the night, the Jaguar XK. Aston Martin inspired, used in an Austin Powers film, and just may give me a reason to give up my search for a meaningful relationship.

Playman: Love Linda

Playman

At The Theatre

“Love Linda” Wednesday Nights 8PM Spring 2010
The Triad Theater, 158 West 72nd Street NYC

The spirits of two Columbia students from 1915, Lorenz “Larry ” Hart and Richard “Ricky” Rogers, young men who have a dream of one day writing lyrics and music on Broadway…..have just seen “Love Linda” at the Triad Theatre on West 72nd Street in Manhattan. The story of Linda Porter, the high society wife of American musical legend Cole Porter…plays every Wednesday night at the Triad at 8 PM. The young men leave the theater…walk west and reach Broadway.

Hart: That was tremendous.

Rodgers: I totally agree. What a great concept for a show, and brilliantly realized.

Hart: Singer and actress Stevie Holland and musical arranger Gary William Friedman have created a one woman-plus-band-show about Linda Porter…which brings us the biography of Cole Porter, as told by Cole’s wife, Linda, while Stevie-as-Linda performs great Porter songs that capture various highlights of his career.

Rodgers: Linda Lee Thomas met Cole Porter on January 30th, 1918. They married and were the toast of Paris…They were both fabulously wealthy, Linda was a Kentucky born heiress, and a line from the show is “Boy with 1 million weds  girl with 2″ when they wed in 1919 that meant a heck of a lot, my friends.

Hart: Linda basically inspired and sponsored Cole, and it was with her support that he had his first real hit “Let’s Do It” from the musical “Paris” which is performed with magical elegance in “Love Linda.”

Rodgers: There are several aspects that make the play outstanding. The tale of Linda and Cole Porter has been told several times….in, at least, two major films. No one has ever focused entirely on Linda…and in doing this in her one woman show….singer and actress Stevie Holland creates a dramatic undertow to the entire piece. Yes, society “gay divorcees” may fall for gay men, particularly if you’re Cole Porter, of a remarkable personality and great talent…but we see in this piece the degree to which Cole was Linda’s life on some way.
….they claimed to have a sex life and to produce a child (that was lost to miscarriage) and in no way is their relationship seen here as cold…as it was, at least, in 2004 film “De-lovely.’ This play captured brilliantly the sparkle between them as felt by Linda who was enraptured by Porter and the era and their adventures and their haunts. Except Hollywood. When they went to Hollywood and Cole became part of the shallow life style of young surfer dudes and bungalow boys…and Linda felt over shadowed by shallow starlets, that was too much for her. She high-tailed it back to Paris.

Hart: As any of us would…

Rodgers: And Cole chased her there because he genuinely loved her. We feel these things more strongly as told entirely from Linda’s perspective ..That question: Why? when asked of a particular time when everyone was amazingly interesting, birds and bees and beans were doing it,  and the dash of a life with such spark pretty much renders the question moot (i. e .why should a straight gal stay with a gay dude) ….is most interesting as answered entirely by Linda.

Hart: And she’s performing his catalog…brilliantly. And based on that catalog alone…birds, bees and beans would be interested in staying with Cole Porter.

Rodgers: It’s dazzling. The musical arrangements by Gary William Freedman are top notch. The three piece band is great and elegant….You”ll come away from this show wanting to 1) Learn the Cole Porter song book on the Riviera 2) See the show again.

Hart : Yes, this show leaves you wanting more. But more in Porter’s life…Linda died in 1957, Cole’s leg was amputated in 1958 (he had been in a riding accident in the 30’s and Linda prevented doctors from amputating both legs…saying it would crush Cole’s spirit), after she died, one leg was amputated it did crush his spirit, and he never wrote another song again…was pretty harrowing. So the show left off pretty much where it should have but….you wanted more songs…more life…more details of each era…and if they decided to add another 45 minute to the show I really think no one would mind a bit. It’s a stunning one woman show that should go around the world.

Rodgers: Obvious places where it can do well: The Paris Hotel and Resort in Las Vegas

Hart: And anywhere in Paris or the Riviera, though particularly in halls poignant in the Porter Story.

Rodgers: I keep saying New Haven ’cause Cole was A Yale man but what do I know? Not a place where high rollers shell out is New Haven, so…I’ll stick with London. The show can do very well in London.

Hart: As a musician and lyricist Cole Porter did not have many peers.

Rodgers: Which reminds me…I’ve gotta write some music!

Hart: And how! And I’ve got to write some lyrics….wait a minute..it’s coming to me… My funny….Santa Claus…sweet comic….Santa Claus….

Rodgers: Hmmm….I hear something there.

Rodgers taps a spectral foot and begins to hum.

The boys continue to walk, up town, humming and composing lyrics, on Broadway.

Judith Jamison meets Montblanc

Judith Jamison choked up a bit as she received the 2010 Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award. It is given to people around the world once a year who have tirelessly given their energy and effort to the Arts. And this years American recipient is Judith Jamison, Artistic director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. She spoke of the dream of founder Alvin Ailey in their present space at 405 West 55 Street. She said that Ailey wanted people to have the opportunity to enjoy dance and have access to it. Philanthropist Joan Weill, whom the Alvin Ailey Dance centers location is named for, donated 15 million dollars for the centers development and completion. Weill spoke of Jamison as her friend and someone she has learned from to, always be fearless and never let anything stand in your way. Concert pianist Lang Lang, briefly performed Chopin’s “Heroic” in honor of Judith. Alvin Ailey dancer Clifton Brown, performed a solo from “Among Us(Private Spaces Public Places)” a recently choreographed dance by Ms. Jamison. Other supporters such as Andre Leon Talley Contributing Editor of Vogue Magazine, Harriet Cole, Creative Director of Ebony Magazine, and former dancer and friend Carmen deLavallade were in attendance. I asked Ms. Jamison what was her hope for the Ailey Center and Company. She said it is seeking her replacement at the helm of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. After mentioning my own past taking classes at Ailey in earlier years, she suggested I try dance classes again. Ms. Jamison could be seen as she left the building peering through a small section of glass wall of a first floor class in progress. Just as curious as any other passerby.
