The Gaye Watkins Report: Mission Adoptable

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Mission Adoptable

Mission Adoptable was the theme of the ASPCA’s Young Friends Benefit at the IAC Building at 555 West 18th Street in NYC. Actor Josh Lucas was the Honorary Chairman for the evening. Supporters for the ASPCA came out to celebrate the continuing efforts of the organization to prevent cruelty to animals across the country. Large and small dogs circulated in the crowd who were up for adoption including a charming little female mixed breed that was part Shih Tzu and Terrier. Faces and info on other adoptable cats and dogs that did not attend were projected on a wide wall. Some guests in attendance were,The Food Networks Anne Burrell, Equestrian Georgina Bloomberg and many others. Staffers and some supporters spoke of their pride about attending the event and as far as staffers are concerned, it is an ongoing job which has had great results. While at one point Josh Lucas preferred to relax by the bar, Georgina Bloomberg and others chose to dance the night away till the bitter end.

Glamour Celebrates 20 Years Of Women of the Year!

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

NEW YORK–November 2, 2010 Brooke Shields led a stellar cast in a reading of Nora and Delia Ephron‘s “Love, Loss and What I Wore” * in Manhattan last night to help celebrate Glamour Magazine‘s 20th anniversary of celebrating Women of the Year.

Nanatasha Lyone, Sherri Shepard and Jaime-Lynn Sieglar rounded out the cast….memorable sketches were “Black” in which Brooke Shields wryly notes:  I feel sorry for people that live in Dallas or Pheonix…cause  they wear things like…Pink.“ ”Bride” in which Natasha Lyonne and Jaimie Lynn Siegler get married at the end of the sketch. “The Dressing rooms” In which Natasha Lyonne asks the question: “to wear heels or to think?” The performances were just fabulous. If had to name standout: I simply had no idea that Natasha Lyonne was such a raspy riot, but, all of the performers were amazing.

A question and answer conducted by style expert Stacy London had Brooke Shields talking about always wanting to look like someone else and the rest of women on stage talking about always to to look like Brooke… but the core of the evening was about the degree to which clothing can so powerfully accent our lives. There was  a sketch in which Shields leaves a her hubsand for a guy who gets arrested and on the day he’s released from jail ,two and half years later, she wears a brown rain coat and brown boots with nothing else. Later in life the woman becomes  a state senator…and her husband is active in local civic groups. Clothes are fun. Glamour is fun. Glamour is for everybody. WE NEED MUCH MORE OF IT. It is elegant, can be refined, and actually involves… taste. It originated from the concept of a magic dust around a person…we all need a little more magic stardust around ourselves…in today’s world, its really up to ourselves to create that.

We at Glamwire sincerely salute Glamour Magazine on 20 years of Women of  Year.

The Gaye Watkins Report: Dignity

Urban Zen), Nick Gruber

Donna Karan hosted the launch party for Dana Gluckstein’s photography book “Dignity”
at the fashionably chic, Urban Zen Center at 711 Greenwich Street New York.  With supporters of the book ranging from Desmond Tutu to Calvin Klein, is it any wonder that guests would want to be present to support  photography which urges attention toward the rights and cultural nuances of indigenous peoples across the world. Dana’s hope is that she has captured a certain part of history in the world. According to her indigenous people “..are the soul and spirit of who we are.” in a film about Ms. Gluckstein’s travels, titled “A Lifetime Journey”, Dana photographs and helps to explain why and how she wants to photograph them. A voiceover of Ms. Gluckstein states that her work “was about the world of the elders. And that she was drawn to those “who have a certain light”.  “I try to create an authentic moment and that its all about being present.” While shooting her subjects she said she found a “collision of cultures and “people in transition.”  She believes that mostly, the demise of indigenous peoples is also an invention of the west and that’s where we have to start.”. Donna Karan spoke of her wanderlust for traveling and meeting cultures unfamiliar to her own. She is soon to travel to meet with Aboriginal people.  Bob Orr UN Assistant Secretary-General said to guests,”I see on the walls We Are The People” and that more of us here and abroad need to see the indigenous as people,… open our hearts and minds and allow the indigenous peoples of the world to speak for themselves.’’ The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples has not yet been endorsed by the US government and as Bob Orr points out, many rights of indigenous people are impeded due to concerns over land use or ownership.

The Gaye Watkins Report: Park Avenue Gala

Park Avenue Armory Gala

“Come right in!” said the Ring Master in top hat and tails as he stood on a small platform just to the right of a carnival display type liquor bars. At the Park Avenue Armory Gala at park avenue and 67 street, he welcomed guests to ride the 55 ft. Ferris Wheel and other rides. Or perhaps you could win or buy a stuffed animal at the Arcade. While waiters made up of handsome young men and pretty women offered drinks and hors d’oeuvres including large coconut shrimps presented on an edge upright serving board colored in red and white stripes, as if they were small circus poodles ready to leap and do a trick or two. A lady on walking stilts in white face and glittering long pants leaned over to my new acquaintance and I and asked us to take our seats for the cabaret dinner performance. The honoree for the evening was Elihu Rose the Vice Chairman of the Park Avenue Armory, and Board Member to places such as to Lincoln Center Theater, and Partner at real estate investment/ management firm, Rose Associates. I was told by a friend of his family that he is a dear generous man, and that he really gives from the heart. As a dark haired woman sang at a piano on a small stage, dinner guests took their seats such as Actress Candace Bergen, and John Seifert Managing Partner and CEO of Ogilvy Mather, New York and North America.
