Glamwire is beyond excited to hear that one of the Gods of Independent film, Cary Woods is back in the film business after a hiatus in which he focused on the creation of Plum TV.  The Weinstein Company (TWC) and Cary Woods Pictures have sealed an exclusive first-look production deal.  The parties are familiar as Woods produced seven titles for Miramax back in the day when Harvey and Bob Weinstein ran that company.

KIDS featured on the cover of NY MagazineGlamwire’s Entertainment Reporter, Stephanie Brooke Friedman, sat down for an exclusive interview with Cary Woods in Manhattan last week.  “I have the best Job in the world,” said Woods. “What other job allows you to turn dreams into celluloid stories seen by millions, while working with some of the most talented artists in the world! (Writers, directors, art directors, cinematographers, costume etc.)”

Bronx-born Woods began his career at William Morris in LA, where he introduced audiences to directors and talent including Gus Van Sant, Charlie Sheen, Uma Thurman and Matt Dillon, among others, and shepherded films including “Heathers” and “Drugstore Cowboy” — he moved to Sony Pictures Entertainment as Vice-President, Office of the Chairman, under Peter Guber and Jon Peters. Woods struck a production deal with Sony two years later to produce films starring Mike Myers, Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei and Christopher Walken, among others.

In 2004, Woods became a founding partner, co-Chairman, and Chief Creative Officer of Plum TV, the luxury lifestyle network spanning eight markets including Aspen, the Hamptons, Miami Beach, Nantucket and Sun Valley. Plum won eight Emmy Awards with programming encompassing real estate, interior design, travel, food and wine, style, wellness, art and culture. Investors have included John Tisch, Chris Blackwell, Jimmy Buffett, Tom Freston and Jason Flom.

ANNA DAVID: Featured Author for April 2013

Glamwire is very excited about our Featured Author for April, Anna David. Anna’s new Kindle Single, They Like Me. They Really Like Me, which covers her attempt to land a celebrity boyfriend, is now available. Only $1.99 (free if you’re Prime)!

They Like Me, They Really Like Me

When one of her college boyfriends ended up becoming a movie star, Anna David became fixated on finding another famous boyfriend. But jobs at celebrity magazines and intimate encounters with boldfaced names ultimately left her clear that no red carpet embrace or award show acknowledgment would bring her what she was ultimately seeking. The novelist, memoirist and author of the best-selling Kindle Single Animal Attraction examines our society’s relationship with fame from one of its most obsessive perspectives: her own.

One of Glamwire’s favorite books of all time:

Party Girl

Celebrity journalist Amelia Stone is a quintessential L.A. party girl. She goes to Hollywood’s most exclusive, star-studded events, where she rubs shoulders (and occasionally more) with celebrities, stays out until all hours of the night, and indulges in the ultimate sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll existence. In short, she’s got everything a party girl needs: the looks, the job, the lifestyle. And oh yes, the out-of-control coke habit.

But it’s hard to keep topping your outrageous exploits, and after losing her job, her friends and much of her mind (not to mention waking up in the hospital after combining five Ambien, four lines of Special K, and an inestimable amount of cocaine), Amelia makes the drastic decision to end her drug abuse. Sobriety, she finds, has its rewards: she starts seeing the man who could be her Mr. Right and gets hired by a big-name magazine to write a column detailing her wild adventures with the celebrity party crowd. And who could write it better? After all, she has plenty of experience to draw on.

There’s just one problem. Overnight, Amelia Stone has become the new face of Hollywood nightlife, and her editors — who don’t know she’s come clean — want her to play the part. As her popularity skyrockets and the film and TV agents start calling, the lure of her former fast-and-furious life of addiction begins to pull at her. Faced with the most exciting opportunity of her career, she must now decide to either save herself — or salvage her reputation as the ultimate party girl.

Acidly hilarious and achingly honest, Party Girl is the ultimate novel about addiction, taking readers on a harrowing ride through a world of Hollywood excess with a heroine who’s deliciously flawed. Whether snorting coke or crying in rehab, hooking up or breaking down, Amelia Stone makes her way across the treacherous grounds of self-destruction and recovery from it without ever losing her sharp wit, unapologetic candor or odds-defying optimism.

Thea Goodman: Featured Author for March 2013

We highly recommend THE SUNSHINE WHEN SHE’S GONE, the debut novel by Thea Goodman, Glamwire’s Featured Author of March.

THE SUNSHINE WHEN SHE’S GONE begins early one frigid, January morning in 2005 when a sleep-deprived new father gives his wife a rare opportunity to sleep-in; he then spontaneously flees lower Manhattan with his infant daughter for a long weekend in the Caribbean. Alternating point of view, from the husband to the wife, the book describes each of their disquieting misadventures, and explores the travails of intimacy, the transfiguring impact of parenthood and the slippery quest for happiness.

She is the recipient of a Pushcart Prize Special Mention, the Columbia Fiction Award and residency fellowships at The Ragdale Foundation and The Corporation of Yaddo. Thea holds an MFA from Brooklyn College, CUNY and has taught writing at New York University, The New School University and The Writing Program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Originally from New York City, she and her family now live in Chicago. The Sunshine When She’s Gone is her first novel.

“Thea Goodman’s astute debut novel poses the question, What if you were to step out of your imbedded life? And her discerning mind answers it with a tale of Manhattanites more inextricably bound together than they might imagine.”

Susan Minot, author of Evening

“Thea Goodman shines in The Sunshine When She’s Gone.”

Vanity Fair

“First-time novelist Goodman is a master of sustained, ‘are-you-KIDDING-me?’ tension as John and Veronica compete for the title of Worst Parents Ever. New parents should find validation that their own sleep-deprived insanity is normal and will pass.”

Library Journal

“A sobering tale of two people discovering what it means to be a parent.”

Publishers Weekly

“Snug and elegant. . . Thea Goodman, a prodigiously talented first-time novelist, distills the keen drama of first-time parenting. . . . The intimacy with which Goodman treats her characters leaves us likewise lucky voyeurs.”

Town and Country

“I’m writing this blurb on very little sleep, because I stayed up far too late finishing The Sunshine When She’s Gone. Thea Goodman’s novel could deprive you of sleep too. It’s suspenseful, funny, realistic, melancholy. She has captured the secret thoughts of new parents so flawlessly, I wonder if she’s installed a listening device into my brain.” –

A.J. Jacobs, New York Times bestselling author of The Year of Living Biblically and Drop Dead Healthy

“Sharp, intuitive, and empathetic. . . Goodman offers a wickedly incisive take on the pressures of parenthood and the resiliency of marital trust.”

“Thea Goodman has made something I would’ve thought impossible: an edge-of-your-seat narrative about parenting a small child. Her emotional investment in her characters is complete as they confront each other, themselves, and the heavy weight of new love.”

Nell Freudenberger, author of The Newlyweds

“From its first alarming domestic scene to its far-from-inevitable, unbearably true conclusion, The Sunshine When She’s Gone is a faultless portrait of a marriage in crisis and the precarious paths we all must take to keep our lives in balance. Ever been in love? This book will shake you, jolt you, jar you, and wake you up to life.”

Patrick Somerville, author of The Cradle and This Bright River

Ron Maxwell’s new film “Copperhead”

Glamwire is very excited about Ron Maxwell’s new film, Copperhead, currently in post production.

Copperhead is unlike any Civil War movie to date. It is a film of the war at home—of a family ripped apart by war, of fathers set against sons and daughters, of a community driven to an appalling act of vengeance against a man who insists on exercising his right to free speech during wartime. A story of the violent passions and burning feuds that set ablaze the homefront during the Civil War, Copperhead the movie is also a timeless and deeply moving examination of the price of dissent, the place of the individual amidst the hysteria of wartime, and the awful cost of war—a cost measured not in dollars but in fractured families, broken loves, and men dead before their time.

The cast, led by Peter Fonda and Billy Campbell includes: Angus Macfadyen, Augustus Prew, Lucy Boynton, Francois Arnaud, Casey Brown, Genevieve Steele, Josh Cruddas, Andrea Lee Norwood, Hugh Thompson, Mary Fay Cody, Brian Downey, Elizabeth Richardson, Wally McKinnon, Daniel Lillford, Charlie Rhindress & Ciarán MacGillivray.

Based on the extraordinary novel by Harold Frederic, which the great American critic Edmund Wilson praised as a brave and singular book that “differs fundamentally from any other Civil War fiction,” Copperhead is the story of Abner Beech, a stubborn and righteous farmer of Upstate New York, who defies his neighbors and his government in the bloody and contentious autumn of 1862.

Copperhead is the great untold Civil War story. Far from the Virginia battlefields whose names etch our history, the war of Copperhead visits the devastation and unimaginable loss of a civil war upon a family and a community whose strength and very existence are tested by fire, rope, knife, and betrayal. This is the Civil War come home.

With Copperhead, director Ron Maxwell, who with Gettysburg and Gods and Generals established himself as our foremost cinematic interpreter of the American Civil War, takes on the War from a stunning and unexpected and richly, unforgettably humanist angle.
