Asmak Taama: Great Egyptian Fare in Bay Ridge

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Village Voice cuisine ace Robert Seitsma’s review this week of the Asmak Taama, the new ultra chic Egyptian seafood spot in Bay Ridge, marks his third review of Egyptian Seafood Joints in the immediate vicinity. The best appetizer was an engaging dish of fried eggplant poached in tomato sauce with hot green chiles, seen being delved into above, by Butthole Surfers frontman Gibby Haynes (left) and bon vivant/Glamwire events producer Scott “Scooter” Pellegrino.

PPR Sales Up 20% in Q1

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

PARIS ? Despite a ?challenging quarter? for Gucci, France?s PPR on Thursday said first-quarter sales rose 20 percent thanks to the addition of Puma and robust sales at Yves Saint Laurent and Bottega Veneta.
Gucci?s sales in the quarter advanced 2.4 percent at constant exchange rates as sales sputtered in more mature markets, like the United States and Europe. After the impact of negative currency exchange, Gucci?s sales dipped 3.3 percent to 513 million euros, or $769.5 million at average exchange.

?Action plans have already been implemented to enable the brand to regain a growth rate consistent with group objectives,? PPR said.

Overall, PPR said sales in the three months through March reached 4.91 billion euros, or $7.37 billion, slightly edging most analysts? estimations.

Sales grew 4 percent after the impact of currency exchange, reflecting the impact the high value of the euro against the dollar and yen is having on European luxury firms.

PPR?s overall luxury sales improved 9.6 percent at constant exchange ? 4 percent after currency exchange ? to 816 million euros, or $1.22 billion, led by rapid growth in Asia, excluding Japan, and China, where sales bounded 116 percent.

PPR?s stock was down over 1.4 percent to 83.20 euros, or $130.58, in mid-morning trading on the Paris Bourse.

Queen Carla

LONDON ?

Clearly she felt it was time to cover up for the Royals. As racy photos of her were splashed all over the British tabloids and magazines, French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy toned things way down Wednesday as she and her husband, President Nicholas Sarkozy, landed here for a 36-hour charm exercise. And Bruni-Sarkozy played it by the rules ? wearing flats so she didn’t tower over her diminutive husband; going even a bit dowdy in a gray midcalf-length belted dress by Dior to meet Camilla and the Queen, and borrowing a page from Jackie O with a matching pillbox hat. As she walked with Prince Philip and rode in a gilded carriage through the cobblestoned streets, Cinderella Carla, even a demure one, brought a much-needed shot of glamour to the frumpy Windsors.

Talk about a contrast.

As Carla Bruni-Sarkozy went through her official duties as French first lady here Wednesday, even the most ardent Brit must have been wondering what happened in the chic stakes. Bruni-Sarkozy may have landed at Heathrow wearing a gray Christian Dior calf-length dress and Dior’s new Babe handbag, which made the former model look more Ma’am than Madame, but the second she stood beside Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall ? and later, Queen Elizabeth II ? it became clear that, even when they’re trying to be sedate, French chic is au naturel.

And that was what she was all over the British tabloids and in British GQ, as the Brits greeted her in their inimitable way. But all that seemed to fade away the second Bruni-Sarkozy and her husband, French President Nicholas Sarkozy, stepped off the plane, where they were greeted by Prince Charles and Camilla (in some strange feathered hat) and then whisked off to Windsor.

The day was a blur of official appointments ? including lunch with the Queen, a visit to Westminster Abbey, and an address by Sarkozy to both houses of Parliament.

For lunch, Bruni-Sarkozy wore a ribbed wool Ottoman gray suit, and for her visit to the houses of Parliament, she wore a light gray wool jersey dress with a navy wool coat.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Queen gave Sarkozy the title of Honorary Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath, an honor previously given to other world leaders.

Carmen Marc Volvo Fall ‘08

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Carmen Marc Volvo’s satin 1920’s evening wear show was a tad boring, though a snip, quite a snip, elegant. Obvious decco 20s references and beautiful satins marked the collection, but to this reporter, not much else marked it. Though I wouldn’t complain if my date showed up wearing one of these ensembles (they carried kind of sombre austerity with their rich historic elegance, always nice at the Kinsdale Tavern or The Barking Dog on the Upper East Side, my haunts) as a show, and as a collection, it did not dazzle or inspire. — Miles Redfield, Reporting.
