Cannes Day 9: In Competition: “Melancholia”

Friday, May 20th, 2011

In the middle of a another night of general hubbub….Francine hands Yves a gift….and she appears to be wearing an ultra chic sheer organza top-coat by Agnes B. We’ve done this many times…but never has the end of the world been predicted BEFORE the awards ceremony….which is really rare. And if I was part of the Jury I’d definitely have seen all the movies by now.

IN COMPETITION: MELANCHOLIA, DENMARK, SWEDEN, FRANCE 130.00

SYNOPSIS: Justine and Michael are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister and brother-in-law. Meanwhile, the planet, Melancholia, is heading towards Earth

Francine DiMartine Makes her move…and leaves her hotel room. She can’t escape That 20th Century Fox Feeling….tho she’s defintiely worked out to be quite the 21st Century Fox….:)

 MAÏWENN

MAÏWENN
Glamwire Special Note: Ouch.

Synopisis: The daily grind for the cops of the Police Department‘s Juvenile Protection Unit – taking in child molesters, busting underage pickpockets and chewing over relationship issues at lunch; interrogating abusive parents, taking statements from children, confronting the excesses of teen sexuality, enjoying solidarity with colleagues and laughing uncontrollably at the most unthinkable moments. Knowing the worst exists and living with it.
How do these cops balance their private lives and the reality they confront every working day?
Fred, the group’s hypersensitive wild card, is going to have a hard time facing the scrutiny of Melissa, a photographer on a Ministry of the Interior assignment to document the unit.

Cannes Day 7: In Competition: Habemus Papam

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

A New Zealand based Fotog out of his mind on truly excellent blended protein snaps these pictures on day 7 of the Hunger Striker allegedly indulging in a baguette at a down town Cannes cafe. These images were later admitedly staged with a friend of the Fotog and in fact are not of the Hunger Striker at all.

IN COMPETITION: HABEMUS PAPAM, FRANCE, ITALY 104 mins

Synopsis: Following the death of the Pope, the Conclave meets to elect his successor. A cardinal is chosen who seems unable to bear the weight of such a responsibility. Is it anxiety? Is it depression? Does he feel inadequate?
The faithful are waiting for the new Pope to appear on the balcony in St. Peter’s Square. The world is on tenterhooks, while in the Vatican they seek ways to come through the crisis.

Cannes Day 4: In Competition: “Drive”

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

One of my favorites snaps from the show…called “You picked the wrong place to Hunger Strike, Guy.” A favorite because it is called “You picked the wrong place to Hunger Strike, Guy”

Drive, USA, 100 mins

SYNOPSIS: DRIVE is the story of a Hollywood stunt driver by day, a loner by nature who moonlights as a top-notch getaway driver-for-hire in the criminal underworld. He finds himself a target for some of LA’s most dangerous men after agreeing to aid the husband of his beautiful neighbor, Irene. When the job goes dangerously awry, the only way he can keep Irene and her son alive is to do what he does best-Drive.

Cannes Day 3: In Competition “The Artist”

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

Hey, well it looks like Monseiur St. Levine’s Fleur has wound up in the trashy downtown Cannes hotel room that Madmoiselle Francine calls home during the fest. NOTE: These people really will not change clothes during this. This will be noticed. Fair warning.  A film that I think several companies are  circling around right now below. It is called “The Artist.”

The Artist. France. 100 Mins.

SYNOPSIS: Hollywood 1927. George Valentin is a silent movie superstar. The advent of the talkies will sound the death knell for his career and see him fall into oblivion. For young extra Peppy Miller, it seems the sky’s the limit – major movie stardom awaits.

Cannes Day 2: In Competition “Michael”

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

Yves seems to misplaced the Fleur he had from last night….as he cautiously nods towards  ”his kind of gal”…. to his left. He also has misplaced his bottle of diazapam which he was hoping to eat during his Hunger Strike….which leads to the question what exactly Can you eat on a hunger strike? If you kiss someone whose been drinking when you are not drinking….r you drinking? These important questions will not be answered during this ballet BUT….here is info on another picture in competition RIGHT NOW–not in 1957, but RIGHT NOW–in Cannes.

Michael. Austria. 96 mins.

SYNOPSIS: MICHAEL describes the last five months of 10-year-old Wolfgang and 35-year-old Michael’s involuntary life together.

Cannes 2011 Begins

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Cannes 2011 began last night as Woody Allen‘s Midnight In Paris Played the Grand Palais. As always, Glamwire trots out the Lunn/Rhodes photo ballet Hunger Strike At Cannes…shot in like 1957….to celebrate. Our interest will be almost entirely in what films are playing for the palm D’or or the Camera D’or. Is Kustaurica at Cannes this year? I cant stand Kustaurica but he’s won the Palm D’or Like 7 Times. This is the hub of international film and we’ll check in from time to time on each film playing this very big show. So below are some images from the Lunn/ Rhodes Ballet “Hunger Strike At Cannes.” Editorial note: Actually in taking a harder look at Kusturica…..which is spelt Kusturica and may be pronounced “Costa Rica“…..Kusturica is just alright with the glamwire news team. I did nearly puke at that 2007 film….but…..he’s friggin Kusturica.

Francine DiMartine Makes the Scene.

On day I of his strike, Yves St. Levine is also on the scene.

At a party in the Hills….Yves and Francine meet.

Yves disoriented somehere on the Riviera….real coverage of fest begins below:

Woody opens the fest…Story here.
