Gaye WatkindsStand up for your Rights

Gaye Watkins And Michael Posner, U. S. Assistant Secratary of State

Human Rights First is an organization that needs little explanation. It creates respect for people’s human rights and justice around the world. According to Human Rights First they ”help to ensure the dignity to which everyone is entitled and to stem intolerance, tyranny and violence. They also know how to give a darn good party. With the help of their Vice Chairman Tom Bernstein, President of Chelsea Piers Management, is it any wonder. The Pier was the host to Human Rights First’

s Awards Dinner and fundraiser which raised 2 million dollars.

Breaking away from the traditional dinner program, NBC News Special Correspondent and MC for the night Tom Brokaw, sat down with Michael Posner for an interview on stage. Michael Posner, Founding Director of Human Rights First and now the Assistant Secretary of State for democracy, human rights and labor, spoke of his new experiences as an Obama appointee. He also touched on his recent conversation with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, regarding her lack of discussion of human rights in China during her recent visit, his commitment to keeping the pressure on for women’s equal rights worldwide and weapons out of the country of Darfur, Africa. Speaking of Darfur, Posner said “The tragedy is everyday.”

. Honorees Sandra Cavalho, Brazilian human rights defender and Principe Gabriel Gonzalez, Colombian human rights advocate, accepted their awards and spoke of their determination to continue being a voice for people in their countries who are at times ignored or silenced. With all the weighty topics of the evening, ending the night with Colombian and Brazilian inspired desserts and dancing to a great Brazilian band left everyone shouting for more.

Robert De Niro and Grace Hightower attend the Spring Ball for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center at The Plaza Hotel.

The Center, The Soul and The Plaza By Gaye Watkins

The 2nd Annual Spring Ball for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center(MSKCC), went smoothly as the men dressed in black tie and ladies in various style of gowns flowed gracefully from cocktails to dinner at The Plaza Ballroom.
Actor Robert Deniro and Grace Hightower, as well as Rapper/entrepreneur LL Cool J, NBC’s  Today show co hosts  Tiki Barber, Hoda Kotb and Kathy Lee Gifford showed their support. Actor Christopher Meloni of Law and Order SVU, also attended and knows all too well how cancer can touch a life by having a friend who is a cancer survivor. Donations for MSKCC, were asked with little pressure from Sloan- Kettering’s Jaime Niven. A video created by the evening’s sponsor NBC, depicted families and patients of cancer treatments.

Grammy Award winner Macy Gray, later got  the crowd on their feet and dancing. She mentioned flying in from LA for the MSKCC event and announced she was wearing  a dress by Tory Burch. The blue border India dress by Tory Burch, event co-chair, worked well with Ms. Grays  height  and personality. Macy sang songs such as, “Why didn’t you call me”, ”I Try” and others. Her plus-size female back up singers in fuschia were a delight as they kicked their  legs high and sang up a storm. At the end of her performance one guest was heard to say, that he was all ” heated up “ and “don’t know what to do now”. Simple solution, take it out to the dance floor like Muffie Potter Aston and John and Martha Glass did till just about midnight. And there was plenty to dance about. Some guests this time last year, were attending Sloan- Kettering for cancer treatments. MSKCC staff member Leslie Jones said earlier in a video montage “..they(the patients) are the real heroes here.”. It’s no wonder some of those heroes wanted their dance to go on all night. For them It was a dance of gratitude and life.
